Greater Albuquerque at a Glance
Albuquerque boasts the largest
population in New Mexico, ensuring
a wealth of travel amenities and services in the area. Depending on the season,
the nearby Sandia Mountains offer both skiing and hiking and can be accessed via
the longest aerial tram in the world, the Sandia
Peak Tram. The Rio Grande Valley is also nearby and provides a natural venue
for many different activities, from camping to canoeing. Historical attractions
are popular in this part of the state and include the Petroglyph
National Monument and Route 66, a historic highway that once linked Albuquerque
to the rest of the country. This route, made famous through song and television,
is now a popular tourist attraction. Agriculture and ranches are ubiquitous in
Greater Albuquerque and have helped to establish a strong rodeo heritage in the
area. The Kirtland
Air Force Base is a prominent feature of the Greater Albuquerque area as well,
contributing siginificantly to the area's economy.
